Season by season

When to come, and for what.

Spring

March – May

The Flower Fields season, and the tail of the rain. Mornings often start under coastal cloud that burns off by midday — locals call it May Gray when it lingers.

Best window for the Flower Fields, which close mid-May.

Summer

June – August

Effectively dry — June averages around a tenth of an inch of rain. August is the warmest month and the ocean is at its most swimmable. Mornings can still open grey before clearing.

Book accommodation early; this is peak season on the coast.

Autumn

September – November

Arguably the best of it: warm water holding on, thinner crowds, and clear days. Rain does not really return until late in the season.

Good time for the beaches without the summer parking hunt.

Winter

December – February

Mild by most standards and the wettest stretch of the year, though "wet" here means about two inches in December. February sees the most rainy days.

Pack a layer for evenings; days stay comfortable.
