It may just be the most important holiday of the year – the one Sunday each year dedicated solely to mothers. For many, this is a perplexing holiday, as we strive to thank our mothers for putting up with the difficult teenage shenanigans, or show our gratitude for their unwavering love and delicious home-cooked meals. But how can we show our appreciation in one short day?
In Carlsbad, the easiest way to find everything you need for the perfect Mother’s Day celebration is to head downtown. Packed with novelty stores, eateries and other unique shops, the Village is the ideal place for Mother’s Day shopping.
Whether you are looking for an antique, or a new-age gadget, the Village is a collage of thoughtful, original and one-of-a kind stores.
At the Bwarie Gift Basket Company, owner Tom Bwarie recommends a personal gift basket for Mother’s Day.
“There’s more thought behind the gift from here,” Bwarie said.
Shoppers can choose from pre-set gift baskets or personalize it by selecting which items to package together for mom.
Chocolates, wine, biscotti and other unique items such as an engraved wine bottle or novelty fortune cookies can be paired together, Bwarie said.
Baskets can also be sent, meaning long-distance mothers can feel the love from afar.
If a gift basket is not what you are looking for, there are plenty of other ways to show your love in the village this Mother’s Day.
Chocked full of relaxing spas and salons, Carlsbad Village is the ideal place to treat mom to a day of pampering. “(A spa day is perfect) because mom doesn’t typically do (things) for herself,” said Michelle Fourmont, owner of Michel Petite Spa & Skin Care Gallery in the Carlsbad Village.
Fourmont recommends a spa package that includes a massage, facial, manicure and pedicure.
“At our spa (the package lasts) about four hours; (you can) add in a little lunch which would make the perfect day,” Fourmont said.
The Body Bar Salon & Day Spa is offering a mother-daughter package to celebrate the special day.
“We thought it would be a great opportunity spend time with your mom to spend (a) fun, pampering time,” said Gina Del Bene, owner of the spa.
The mother-daughter package lets patrons select services from the spa’s menu including facials, haircuts and styles and manicures.
“If we have some younger kids … we (will) have some fun up-does and glitter to put in the hair,” Del Bene said.
Not every mother is in need of a spa day, but there are plenty of shops and boutiques in the village that will appeal to any and every Mother’s Day need.
At Anita K Clothing & Accessories in the village, owner Anita Knight recommends giving a handknit wrap.
“(The wraps) are great because they fit everybody, (it is a) wrap that you can wear with a dress, over jeans, with anything,” Knight said.
Good for mothers both young and old, the wraps are a unique, everyday piece that women can enjoy, Knight said.
But if clothing is too daunting a present to purchase, the Village also offers an array of eateries and restaurants to treat mom on the special day.
At the Ocean House restaurant, mom will be treated to a Mother’s Day brunch, complete with a made-to-order omelette bar, homemade pastries and pies, fresh fruit and mimosas.
“It’s a great place to start because we’re right on the corner (of Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard) then you’ll be able to turn around and go right into the Village,” said Marie Vasquez, special events director at Ocean House.
With plenty of activities including shopping, dining and relaxation available, the Village of
Carlsbad is the place to fill all your Mother’s Day needs, whether you are shopping for a gift, or want a place to spend the special day.
