Father’s Day is opportunity for unique gifts

This Father’s Day, give dad something different. Put that tie back on the shelf, hang that shirt back up and leave the tools where they are; the man in your life would rather shop for these items on his own. Instead, give him something unexpected and unique.

“Everything we do here is centered around families, it just makes sense for Father’s Day,” said Josh Cantor, CEO of California Watersports, which is located on the Carlsbad Lagoon.

Cantor recommends giving dad a day of water fun. California Watersports offers wakeboarding, paddle boating, kayaking, wave running and other water activities.

“(We are situated on) our own private beach (with) three palapas and picnic tables; the perfect place to come down and have a barbecue and all the stuff you rent, you rent right there,” Cantor said.

For larger families, California Watersports offers group boat rides.

“If you’ve got a big family and want something that all of you can do together, rent a wakeboard boat,” Cantor said.

The ride includes a boat driver, wakeboard instructor and equipment.

If the open ocean is more your dad’s style, then he may enjoy the gift of surfing lessons.

At the San Diego Surfing Academy, fathers can enjoy private and group lessons.

“(Our) location is ideal for learning or improving because it boasts a sandy bottom, it’s typically uncrowded and we don’t have grouchy locals,” said Pat Weber, owner of the academy.

Weber said all ages can enjoy the sport.

“There (are) no typical clients because people come from all walks of life,” Weber said.

After a tiring day at the beach, dad may need a little rest and relaxation, and what better way to pamper him on his special day than a trip to the spa.

Yes, spas are for men, too.

“We are really building our male clientele here,” said Joyce Carboni, owner of Skinsational Spa.

Father’s Day could be the perfect time to help the father in your life unwind and de-stress.

Carboni prescribes the spa’s “Gentleman’s Journey,” package, which includes a facial, body soak and massage.

“It’s really a trend and its building,” Carboni said of men frequenting spas. Additionally, Skinsational offers couples packages that allow two people to indulge in the spa’s relaxation together.

For some families, the best way to tell dad you love him is to say it in a way he will never forget.

Paulette McNeal-Roberts, owner of MediaMax Enterprise, offers video cards for the special occasion.

“Family members come in and they do a video to their father, or a father that they admire, telling him how much they have meant to them throughout the year,” McNeal-Roberts said.

The videos can include poems, songs or a simple message, whatever the party wants to do for their video.

“This would be ideal for families who will not see their fathers for Father’s Day,” McNeal-Roberts said.

The next video taping will be June 10, for more information call (760) 729-4079.
